Girl in the Picture on Netflix follows a murderer who marries his own daughter.

Netflix is undoubtedly the place to host your late-night craving for gruesome murders and unsolved mysteries, with dramatized depictions of real-life serial killers like Mindhunter and Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil and Vile as well as a slew of documentaries centered on all sorts of killers, rippers, and murderers. Yes, we do mean late at night because, of course, the two hours you spend analyzing what you just saw while lying in bed are all a part of the experience.

The recent Netflix documentary Girl in the Picture, with its difficult-to-solve case of missing children and a murderer who married his own daughter, joins this collection of heinous crime and psychiatric study.

The discovery of Tonya Hughes' death by the side of the road in Oklahoma serves as the film's opening scene. She was survived by her two-year-old son Michael and a man who was later identified as being her husband, Clarence Marcus Hughes. Although the original inquiry into her death strongly hinted that her husband might have been involved in it, authorities were unable to uncover any proof to support this theory.

But when it becomes clear that Clarence couldn't care for the boy, the father and son are split apart, and this is when the movie takes an intriguing turn. Following a four-year separation, Clarence barges into Michael's school with a gun and kidnaps the student. The FBI naturally becomes interested in the missing person case after learning that Michael is not Clarence's son and that "Clarence" and "Tonya" are not their real names.

Following Clarence's eventual arrest without the youngster present, the movie delves deeply into the research of who Tonya and Clarence are and where Michael went missing.

Initially appearing to be a typical instance of an abusive husband inadvertently killing his wife, the story then takes some startling turns. There are revelations that suggest Tonya might genuinely be his daughter, that she has children besides Michael, and that Clarence might possibly be an infamous serial killer and pedophile who is wanted in multiple places.

Although the focus of the movie is more on the crime than the psyche of these characters, certain horrific scenes, including an interrogation of Clarence, a conversation with Tonya's mother, and in-depth discussions of child rape, need to be warned of.

Although it simply serves as an additional layer to the criminal investigation, the movie does show the cycle of abuse and violence brought on by shattered families and abducted children. This cycle is one that the movie encourages you to consider, particularly with its (slightly) more optimistic ending. If anything, this documentary's shocking disclosures demonstrate that not everyone's character is solely a product of their environment.
