Speak No Evil : Review (2022)

In the horror film Speak No Evil, Danish tourists Bjrn and Louise are in Tuscany with their little daughter Agnes when they meet Patrick and Karin from the Netherlands. While on vacation with their little son Abel, Patrick and Karin meet another couple. After some small talk and a few drinks, both couples appear to click, and they spend the rest of the time getting to know one another.

After a few months have passed and both couples have returned to their homes, Patrick and Karin send Bjrn and Louise a postcard inviting them to spend a weekend at their house in Holland. Bjrn and Louise accept the invitation after giving it some thought, and they soon depart with Agnes.

When the family arrives, Patrick and Karin welcome them with open arms and gracious hospitality. At first, everything appears to be going swimmingly, and both spouses eagerly anticipate their time together over the coming days.

Morten Burian, Sidsel Siem Koch, Fedja Van Huêt, and Karina Smulders are among the cast members of the Christian Tafdrup-directed and co-written film Speak No Evil. The horror film, which is primarily in English but also includes some Dutch and Danish dialogue, is now streaming on Shudder.

This is a slow-moving story, but it is one that is tense and structured around an uneasy environment. The main plot is around two couples spending time together and realizing they are not as similar as they first believed.

This is a distressing and problematic situation for the one couple, Bjrn and Louise, and it only becomes worse the longer they stay with their new "friends." It becomes exceedingly challenging to ignore the antisocial behavior that their equivalents, Patrick and Karin, exhibit.

The film's cleverness, though, lies in how it depicts this antisocial behavior. It starts off as a series of minor annoyances that can first be attributed to cultural or societal differences, rather than one major incident that might be sufficient to make Bjrn and Louise leave. Yes, they eventually express their opinions, but it is challenging to argue with Patrick and Karin because they continue to claim that there is only a "difference of opinion" at issue. As an audience member, it is obvious that Patrick and Karin are simply horrible people, and that this situation is not about a difference of opinion.

However, in today's world, people often spew lies out loud on radio, television, and the internet. We are aware that it is taking place and that they shouldn't be let to get away with it, but we are unable to take any action. And that's another reason why I adore Speak No Evil so much. Because this movie is not only a fantastic little horror movie that held me from beginning to end, but it also felt really current.

In fact, Bjrn asks his hosts why they act the way they do in a crucial moment from the film that really captures the essence of the situation. The response is succinct and straightforward, but it explains why Bjrn and Louise are in the situation they are in and, possibly, why our society is currently experiencing issues as well.

But setting the social and political commentary aside, Speak No Evil is a genuinely terrifying film, regardless of what it may or may not be trying to communicate. Christian Tafdrup, the director, has a strong grasp of this film and is adept at adding tension and suspense at precisely the correct times to produce a powerful image. To ensure that this movie knows when to captivate the audience and when to frighten them, Tafdrup knows how to set the tone just so. It has a scary conclusion (spoilers ahead), and there are a few spooky moments sprinkled throughout.

A horror movie that hits all the right notes and doesn't miss a beat is Speak No Evil. It successfully blends tale and atmosphere, and I must admit that it impressed me. Halloween has not yet arrived, but if you're searching for a horror movie to help you get in the Halloween spirit, watch Speak No Evil. It is beautifully gloomy, occasionally terribly unsettling, and always fascinating.
