The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist’ on Netflix

The Netflix sports docuseries has returned with Manti Te'o's horrific catfishing incident.

Fans have been riveted by a new Netflix documentary series on a catfishing fraud that almost ended the football career of an American who had aspirations of playing in the NFL.

Manti Te'o describes starting a relationship with Lennay Kekua, a 22-year-old Stanford University student whom he met on Facebook, during his college years in Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist.

Manti Te'O was an impressionable young adolescent who was attempting to become a professional NFL player when he became embroiled in a scandal after being catfished online by a very cunning and ruthless individual. If I hadn't been witnessing individuals go over and explain their parts in the story, I wouldn't have believed this story, which is virtually amazing.

Online conversations between Ronaniah and Manti soon developed, but Ronaniah was actually catfishing him by posing as Lennay Kekua. As Manti's reputation and profession grew, his love for the stranger he had never met started to wane. In revenge, Ronaniah (posing as Lennay's brother) informs Manti that Lennay had passed away. It is really mind-boggling that someone could be so harsh and insensitive.

Manti, who was visibly distressed and heartbroken, was elevated to greater renown as a result of the sympathy, understanding, and attention this narrative garnered from followers. Unfortunately for them both, Deadspin received a tip and started looking into claims that this "girlfriend's death" was a fabrication. Now, they discovered the truth and published it, just like all good journalists do.

The emphasis shifted from the deception to Manti's sexuality because America is a very masculine culture. He was passed over by many NFL organizations because they were curious about his sexual orientation. He lost not only his honor as a result of this incident, but also countless millions of money.

We have exclusive interviews with Manti and Ronaniah/Naya. Ronaiah has come out as transgender and implied that her behavior against Manti was a result of her lack of self-awareness, but I found it difficult to relate to her. She appeared to consider herself as the victim and showed little regret for her earlier deeds.

Exclusive interviews with Ronaniah/Naya and Manti are available here. I found it difficult to relate to Ronaiah despite the fact that she had come out as transgender and claimed that her actions toward Manti were the product of her lack of self-awareness. She didn't appear to feel sorry for her prior actions and seemed to see herself as the victim.

This documentary is a great viewing all around. This narrative has a lot going on; it is compelling and undoubtedly a conversation starter. Having a variety of viewpoints adds a lot of excitement and encourages audience members to reflect and form their own thoughts about the subject at hand. For me, Manti Te'O is a victim, and this documentary is among the craziest ones I've recently seen. If you enjoy sports, scandals, documentary programs, and serious drama, I highly recommend viewing.
