Haunted Asylum

Haunted Asylum

A group of people livestream their inquiry into a purportedly haunted asylum, which leads to bizarre shenanigans.

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, a 2018 South Korean found footage horror film directed by Jung Bum-shik, is titled "Gonjiam" (Korean: ; Hanja: ; RR: Gonjiam). Starring Wi Ha-joon, Park Ji-hyun, Oh Ah-yeon, Moon Ye-won, Park Sung-hoon, Yoo Je-yoon, and Lee Seung-wook, it is based on a real-life psychiatric institution of the same name. The story revolves around a horror web series crew that visits a closed-down hospital for a live broadcast in order to increase viewers and exposure.

Two adolescent lads are documenting their discovery of the deserted Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital, where it is rumored that the superintendent of the facility murdered all of the patients before disappearing. The intensive care unit, Room 402, which has never been opened, is where the two go. They hear a ping pong ball as they attempt to open the door. Their broadcast terminates suddenly. Ha-Joon, the owner of the YouTube channel "Horror Times," chooses to investigate the building after learning of the teenagers' disappearance.

The team arrives at the hospital and sets up shop. To manage the transmission, Ha-Joon remains at their base camp away from the road. The rest of the group locates some underwear and uses it as a marker by tying it to a tree. Charlotte breaks in and puts holy water into a tiny Petri dish to see what happens. They discover a group photo of all the workers and patients in the director's office. Ji-Hyun and Charlotte look around the lab and discover a doll. The crew conducts a rite to 'welcome' the ghost outside, but when the bell strings they had put up to ring start to tremble, they get horrified.

However, it turns out that Seung-Wook and Sung-Hoon, who were unaware of the other four, staged it to gain more views. When Charlotte and Ji-Hyun return to the lab, they are shocked to see that the doll has moved. The group realizes that the doll was the identical one that one of the patients was holding in the group shot.

Real Information about the Gonjiam Haunted Asylum :

According to a 2012 CNN article, the facility was one of the seven "freakiest locations on the earth" in Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018).

More rational factors than their fantastic tales would have you believe led to the hospital's closure and abandonment in the 1990s. Not because of deranged doctors or bloodthirsty patients, Gonjiam had to close primarily because of economic downturns, unhygienic facilities, and issues with the sewage disposal system. The owner fled the nation as the sewage issue escalated and did not leave behind any records regarding the property or the structures on it. Aside from the countless tourists, film crews, and ghost hunters who visit to the region to stroll through the area in search of proof of paranormal activity or the proverbial skeletons in the asylum's closets, the hospital eventually just closed its doors and has been abandoned ever since.

Although Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital is officially off limits to the general public and locals don't actively encourage tourists or provide directions to the facility, about a thousand people nonetheless break in and wander the hospital's grounds each year. The buildings still contain abandoned hospital equipment, rubbish, and filthy bedding, contributing to their image as spooky and haunting places.

But before major events start happening, it actually doesn't take long. Many of these images still trouble me today. Or rather, I thought a lot about one particular character for a while. It was the spookiest moment ever, and it works so well.

The truly scary thing in Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is the fact that the producer of the online event wants these bad things to happen. He wants to get one million live viewers because doing so will earn him a lot of money.

The co-author Sang-min Park and the director Beom-sik Jeong of "Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum" are not eligible for this benefit of the doubt. As their video demonstrates, they are undeniably familiar with the aforementioned movies and their offspring because "Gonjiam" is essentially a "Greatest Hits" or "Worst of" compilation that has every cliché that "found footage" has to offer, depending on your point of view.

I think this could have been better and wouldn't have needed so much padding at the beginning. In fact, I would have rated this a tad higher had the story simply picked up earlier on. Gonjiam" isn't a complete waste, as there are some scattered moments of entertainment, but there really isn't anything done here to stand out among a long list of found-footage tripe.
